Raven Feed Excellence through cooperative entrepreneurship

ChainModel

Chainmodel

RavenFeed makes industrial scale insect production available to established companies.

The concept is twofold:

  • An insect factory, designed by RavenFeed: The Raven SmartHatch (RSH)
  • A high quality chain with access to a specialist network to facilitate local Black Soldier Fly (BSF) insect rearing

In this modern and modular chain concept, open innovation, collaboration and sustainability are the key components.

The chain model that RavenFeed offers consists of 6 essential links:

In this link organic residual flows are mixed and upscaled to certified substrate. Today the residual flows consist of vegetable and fruit waste, but in the future kitchen waste (Swill) and waste form supermarkets (FFS) can also be used. Sadly, one third of our produced food ends up as waste. RavenFeed, in collaboration with partners, uses this waste as a raw material instead of fermenting, composting or even incinerating it.

BSF-eggs

The production of the insect eggs

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is an insect that has evolved over millions of years into a super fly that can efficiently convert organic waste streams into high quality proteins and oils. Specialized BSF reproduction farms provide RavenFeed with certified BSF eggs.

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) has a life cycle of approximately 40 days.

From the moment the flies crawl out of the pups they have up to six days to live. During this period, they will look for a partner to mate with. The mating behavior is activated by light. In the absence of natural light, LED lighting is used to illuminate the fly cages. After reproduction the flies die.

An adult fly can lay up to 1000 eggs. After four days the eggs hatch, after which they are placed in the moist substrate. From now on rearing takes place in the Raven SmartHatch.

The larvae are now fully grown and stop eating. They are now in the pre-pupal stage and slowly move towards a dryer environment to pupate. After a day or six a quiet spot is found and the transition towards adult fly starts. The pupation takes another 10 days.

In the next 10 to 14 days the larvae, placed in Ravenfeed’s own rearing trays, will grow considerably. When harvest ready they have become almost 4000 times bigger! During sieving the larvae are separated from the Frass and fed to the poultry directly. This is where the process ends for the Raven SmartHatch. The BSF-reproduction partners take it a couple steps further.

Raven Smarthatch

Raven SmartHatch: the insect factory, engineered by RavenFeed
A 12-meter sea container converted into a high-tech insect factory

Raven SmartHatch: the insect factory designed by RavenFeed. The RSH is provided with fresh larvae eggs and larvae feed. It is supplied in specially designed crates: the SmartIncubators. Using precision aeration, the SmartIncubators are variably conditioned by a vHVAC-system that provides the optimal environment for the insects. RavenFeed takes care of the maintenance of the RSH and ensures continuous operation with all the stakeholders in the chain. The RSH is monitored and operated remotely by RavenFeed.

Larvae

Ready to harvest: the sales market for BSF larvae and derivates

When the larvae have fully grown, the customer is notified which SmartIncubators can be harvested. They are placed in the Harvester, where the larvae are separated from the frass. The BSF larvae can be fed live to the poultry at the farm or used as feed at fish farms or high-quality proteins and oils can be extracted from the larvae.

Frass

Frass is the residual material that remains after the harvest

By using this high-quality soil improver in agriculture arises a fully closed circular chain. Frass ensures fewer pesticides are needed in agriculture and horticulture. This is due to the high concentration of chitin which has a natural antibacterial effect and repels certain insects.

Transport

Specialized transport is required to connect all links

RavenFeed aims to reduce long polluting transport chains to local transport by means of a Hub-Hatch system. This Hub-Hatch system consists of several Raven SmartHatch modules in a network around a RavenHub. It functions as a logistics center.
